Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) is one of Rockstar’s most iconic titles, but its PC port has been notoriously plagued with performance issues.
Even years after its release, players still encounter lag, stuttering, and low frame rates, especially when running the game on modern systems. If you’re using DXVK to improve compatibility on newer systems or to utilize Vulkan for better GPU performance, you might have noticed occasional lag spikes.
Thankfully, there’s a simple fix using a custom DXVK configuration file. Here’s how to implement it and smooth out your gameplay experience.
What Is DXVK?
DXVK is a Vulkan-based translation layer for Direct3D 9, 10, and 11. It’s widely used by gamers who play older games on modern PCs, especially under Linux through tools like Proton or Wine. DXVK translates DirectX calls into Vulkan, significantly improving performance and compatibility in some cases. However, GTA 4’s dated engine can still struggle with certain setups, leading to stuttering or lag.
